I have to agree I was in shock that with $3500 in prize money for the burnout comp mostly thanks to local petrol head Steve Payne, that there were only 13 cars in the comp. Of course those 13 cars certainly put on an awesome show and it was awfully hard to judge due to the top 3 being so completely different to each other.
1st one to mind was the Blue Hilux if I remember rightly. He came out slowly making his way around the pad, lots of instant smoke, lots of revs lots of smoke for most of the time and let a tyre or 2 go and the crowd loved it.
Soon after a pink VL came out I wondered if it would turn the tyres and in the first 10 seconds I didn’t think it would then all of a sudden smoke was rippin off the tyres and he was away. A long skid to say the least but a slow start and good ending and the crowd was a little quieter I thought. Then a Blown V8 holden ute with instant attitude, blower screaming, people in front of me screaming out and yelling how awesome it was and I guess you could say a reasonable short skid compared to the others but overall a great start, lots of smoke, some blown tyres, plenty of flames, some sparks for good measure along with some holes in the track that I have to pay for and he was done.
So how to judge them all? Well if you were judging like some southern shows do, then the Pink Commodore would have won I think. If you’re into tough engines in small cars, the Hilux would have won BUT The crowd know what they like watching, none of them care about how it’s judged so with that said the Top prize went to the Blown Holden Ute of Matt Cavaganah. Now I think all 3 of these guys should have got 3k for their trouble. As I also think the other 10 cars in the skids should have also scored something for putting on the show but unfortunately that’s how the cookie crumbles and I guess another year goes by and another reason for some apparent controversy.
We did also have other events like the Street Racing where the final proved a little different than everyone expected. I think old mate was trying to do a wheel stand and got a little out of control, all that power isn’t easy to put to the ground after all and he lost by a car length to a quick as heck falcon that had the top end legs to keep the other guy honest. Some people asked a fair question why a drag car is allowed to play... simple answer, he paid his entry fees, he brought his favourite toy along and he had a good time so there is no case to answer here. The cruising was cruisie as well with the 180 entrants hitting the track all weekend long. We donated some $700 to a local charity so at least 700 people other than entrants got to go cruising on the track and hopefully that might just make them get their own cars out of the shed for next time we visit in 2011. And out of those 700 people, hopefully a new Powercruiser is born and that’s why we keep coming back for more. Thanks to all the Entrants, Fire people, Ambulance people, the track management for always making it easy for us to be there. All the Powercruise staff for eating all my prawns. Bowlsey for not hurting our jaws from laughter all weekend.
The sponsors Supercheap Auto, Rev It Up Performance, Lukey, McKerns, Top End Hire, Hidden Valley Tavern, Dave Denaro and his guys, Sign City, Mobile Mayhem, Dean from Arafura Catering, Southern Cross TV, Screw Piers Australia, Tricked Out Customs, Custom Fabrications, Combined Comunications for their 2 way radios, the local newspapers all of which helped us out in their own big way and the local radio stations for all of their support. If it wasn’t for these guys Powercruise couldn’t afford to trip to the top end so get behind these guys to make sure they all look after us again to ensure Powercruise comes back and maybe with some interstate cars just for fun. Catch Ya Cruisin...Gup
